In the midst of our world challenge, many feel distressed and overwhelmed with anxiety and uncertainty. How can we reach out to others during this time of isolation and restrictions as we adjust to a "New Normal" during the Holiday Season? This requires a compassionate heart and the capacity to care deeply. Perhaps you may not know how, especially now. However, even in isolation and restriction, we cannot lose our humanity.
Simple acts of kindness really make a difference. It leaves an indelible impression and opens the heart of the receiver and inspire others to pass it on. Be alert to the concerns and needs of others. One day, I lost my driver's license after stopping for gas. I was frantic and tracked my steps to no avail. That day I waited in line to replace my license. Days later, I received an envelope from a person who lived in another state who was in the area. This person found my drivers license and mailed it to me. I was amazed and inspired by the thoughtfulness of this person and sent a lovely Thank You note acknowledging my appreciation.
The gift of time, friendship, a helping hand, a phone call or financial assistance are ways to reach out. I recall during a difficult period of my life, volunteering at the children's hospital. This experience made me get out of myself and do something for others. I served coffee to the parents, greeted families, and worked with children in the Activity Center. It shifted my perspective on life and what is most important with a grateful heart.
I watch the 'colors dance of the autumn leaves' as they gently fall from my oak trees. Let's get creative. Raking the leaves or tidying up the yard of an elderly person, widow, or for someone who is ill or has a family member who is ill can be a big help; sending a thoughtful card, needful things, and positive healing energy. There are so many ways to be creative and extend acts of kindness that do not deplete our resources but expands our capacity to LOVE.

As you engage in these kind acts, pay attention to how this makes you feel and be grateful for the opportunity. Most importantly, be kind to yourself.
